Drawn to unforgiving media, Brian Barreto (he/ they) has worked with glass, ceramics, performance, and sound; but marble has always been the challenger and wrecker of wrists, the first love. A multimedia artist primarily working sculpturally in stone, bronze and ceramics; Brian’s practice pursues the human form through expressions of identity while investigating the vitality of belonging. Current series explore transformational bodyscapes, migration, cultural fragmentation, and interior space, often through longform engagements. A parallel practice of abstraction is founded upon listening — informed by the musicality of repetition and active responses to the medium. Having apprenticed sculpture in Germany and the US, they furthered their studies at the University of Wisconsin. Brian continues to build upon their understanding through ongoing curatorial and collaborative projects, forging their own tools, and developing more sustainable methods of art production in their studio art practice. Brian has exhibited their work in the United States and Europe, and is committed to creating further opportunities for artists in their community through the Alluvial Project, an artist-run project space and artist-in-residence program. Brian is represented by Sun & Dust in Santa Fe, NM.
